One major food source for starfish, besides corpses, are live fish while they are sleeping.
Each of a starfish’s arms ends in a sophisticated eye.
Because a starfish’s nervous system is distributed evenly amongst its arms, they take turns becoming the dominant arm or “front end.” The arm closest to the smell of food “takes over” the body.
Starfish begin as swimming larvae, but what becomes the adult starfish will in some species break off and take the digestive tract with it, leaving the larva to continue swimming and die of starvation.
In other species, the entire left or right side of the larva takes over and digests the other half.
Some starfish raise off the ground, wait for a small fish or crab to wander underneath in search of shelter, and drop down on them.
Some starfish have a circular ring of “teeth” and can chew through bones or hard corals, though most feed be ejecting their stomach out of their body, pressing it against food or inserting it into openings to digest prey externally.
Starfish and other echinoderms are actually related to us Chordates, rather than belonging to any true “invertebrate” groups.
